  1. This album is an oft-overlooked item in the Coleman canon because of Ornette's choice of axe, the assumption probably being that a tenor dilettante couldn't make a great tenor album. But Ornette had an early history playing the larger horn, and his approach on tenor is not all that different from his approach playing alto.4/5(9).

  6. May 03,  · Although he usually plays alto sax, Coleman switched to the tenor for this album because in his opinion "the best statements Negroes have made of what their soul is have been on tenor saxophone". Like nearly all the Atlantic sessions, it's a quartet recording and features sublime performances from the leader with great support from Don Cherry on trumpet, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums.4/5(9).

  7. A record that bursts out with a sound that definitely lives up to its striking title – as Ornette Coleman explores the new frontiers of experimental jazz with one of his great groups from the end of the 60s! The album's got the intensity of the best ESP sessions of the period, but also shows LP Brand: Atlantic (Label).

  8. It's an understatement to say that Ornette Coleman 's stint with Atlantic altered the jazz world forever, and Ornette on Tenor was the last of his six LPs (not counting outtakes compilations) for the label, wrapping up one of the most controversial and free-thinking series of recordings in jazz history.
